Starting from Scratch

The Sky Lounge Blog is an open diary for every international pharmacist who has "Canadian Pharmacist" as their ultimate goal.

Whether you are back home just thinking about making the move, in Canada figuring things out, in the thick of your PEBC exam prep, navigating internship or you have already actualized your re-licensing dream, there is a room designed specifically for you here.

As an international pharmacist myself who successfully conquered this path, I have lived the highest highs and the lowest lows of this journey. Later, stepping into my PEBC Mentorship role provided me with an even deeper, behind-the-curtain look at what it truly takes for IPGs to not just move to Canada, but actually thrive here.

Conversations about the Canadian re-licensing journey tend to focus obsessively on only one thing: PASSING.

We all yearn to make that "I’m happy to announce..." LinkedIn post. We want to attend the conferences, receive the "you inspire me" compliments, and feel the public accolades validating that we are doing something meaningful with our lives.

But where does that leave us until that becomes our reality?

Too often, it leaves us in the shadows. It leaves us feeling like we can't share our story because it isn’t "good enough"... yet.

The Faith to FOCUS!

Moving is a Life Transformation. Not an Exam Score.

But a passing score is not the full picture. My biggest takeaway? My journey didn't magically end the day I got licensed.

"I still have so much more to learn, live, and experience."

Moving to Canada is a complete, tectonic life transformation. It is a psychological rewrite of who you are. Yet, so many international pharmacy graduates fall into the trap of putting their entire lives, their identities, and their happiness at a complete standstill until they see their PEBC number on that notorious “PASS list” or until they receive their "congratulations email" from the regulatory college that you are officially Licensed.

We hyper-fixate on the destination while completely ignoring the reality that migration strips away our familiar foundations all at once.

Moving is a massive collection of small, daily steps, each leading to new milestones that continuously demand fresh personal growth. This journey will challenge you mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. It forces you to grieve the effortless professional status you left behind while simultaneously pushing you to build a new one from the ground up in an unfamiliar culture.

"If you are only focusing on studying and passing the PEBC exams, you are missing massive, beautiful pieces of your own story."

When you collapse your entire existence into a test score, a failure doesn't just feel like a failed exam...

"...it feels like a failed life."

That is an unbearable weight to carry.

For the very first time, I am putting together a comprehensive, one-stop hub for IPGs to understand exactly what they need to build a successful, whole life in Canada. This isn't just about PASSing and getting Licensed; it is about surviving the human experience of rewriting your destiny.

I am creating a structured space for us to pause, reflect, and realize that we are building a whole new existence entirely from scratch.

We are building it moment by moment, day by day. No singular exam outcome defines your worth, your capability, or your future impact as a Canadian Pharmacist. In our highs and in our lows, we just need to stay rooted in this one mandate:

Keep. Going. Forward.

If we stay committed to that, we are completely unstoppable.

The Courage to Be Cringe

Like your IPG story, I am building this blog completely from scratch. Starting a platform like this was actually on my 2024 Vision Board. I am so proud to finally make it a reality, and I refuse to wait until it feels "perfect" or packed with articles before I share it with you.

I am being brave enough to simply begin, giving myself full permission to grow, stumble, and learn in real time.

Write the Vision down!

Let’s be completely honest about what "cringe" really means.

It is that terrifying, deeply uncomfortable friction of being a beginner again. It’s the voice in your head that whispers,

“Who do you think you are to try this?”

For an educated, established professional, looking like a novice is agonizing. We are used to being the experts, the ones with the answers, the ones who have it all together.

Stepping into the unknown, whether it’s publishing your first blog post, re-writing your Pharmacist story, walking into a new Canadian clinical setting, facing your friends and family after a setback or rebuilding your life when you already established success in your home country, requires you to put your ego entirely on the line.

It demands that you embrace the messy, unpolished middle phase of growth.

"Perfectionism is just fear in a fancy suit."

It paralyses us into doing nothing because we are terrified of the judgment of people who don't even have the guts to enter the arena themselves. I am choosing to evict that fear.

Oftentimes, the only thing standing between us and our highest goals is raw courage.

  • The courage to be cringe.

  • The courage to fail.

  • The courage to look silly.

  • The courage to try again.

  • The courage to simply start over.

If I had the grit and the absolute audacity to leave behind everything and everyone I love in Jamaica, to pack up my entire life, cross an ocean, and navigate the freezing, unfamiliar terrain of building a completely new existence in Canada, then I can absolutely be brave enough to open up this diary.

My story didn't wait for a perfect script, and neither should yours. We don't need a flawless plan to move forward. We just need the willingness to take the first, messy step.
